The Blue John Caverns are still actively mined during the winter period, from any one of eight seams. There is a tourist route open to the public for guided tours at regular intervals over the day. The route descends around 250 steps to the deepest point, with several impressive caverns along the way.
The guided tour is informative and engaging. Plenty of information about the formation of the caverns and historical context, the mining process and Blue John itself.
There are only a handful of places the raw Blue John seams are visible on the tour, but the price is worth the experience.
